Shabby Chic Vintage Spring Card | CraftyPaws

I had a beautiful old piece of 12″ x 12″ designer paper (sorry, I have no idea where it is from) that had sparkly embossed vintage images of birds in a bird cage and butterflies. The paper was so special that I thought that if I just fussy cut, matted and layered the images the paper could “do all the work” (or at least most of the work) for a lovely vintage style spring card.

20160327_131118I started with a corrugated 5.5″ x 5.5″ card base, the vertical stripes of which I thought would echo the bird cage bars nicely. I dry brushed on some white acrylic paint mixed with Plaid Folk Art Extreme Glitter acrylic paint to softened the kraft brown and add a little shimmer. Then I cut a 5″ x 5″ and a 4″ x 4.5″ piece from the plain parts of the designer paper, distressed the edges with my Prima Comfort Distressing Tool, and inked the edges with Tim Holtz Distress Ink in Vintage Photo to create some mats.

20160327_131054I fussy cut out the large image of the birds in the bird cage and added some Ultra Fine Flower Soft in Raspberry Fizz to the flower images. I used this image as the main focal point and embellishment for the card front. I also cut the part of the designer paper with the butterflies generally into a 5″ x 5″ size, fussy cutting around the tips of the butterfly wings so they could “hang” off the edge of the paper and add some interest. I used this butterfly paper for the inside lining of the card.

To add more texture, I used the scraps of the designer paper with an old Prima Doily Die (the one I used is retired, but there is a similar one by Spellbinders available HERE) to die cut some doily parts to tuck in between the matting layers. There were also some pale green swipes on the designer paper too so I cut around a couple of those to create layering banners. Lastly I bunched up some metallic gold DMC thread and tucked that behind the bird cage image for a little extra touch of whimsy.

The following is a video share of this card:
