Spooky Silhouette Halloween Card | CraftyPaws

I had so much fun creating this spooky silhouetted cemetery scene card. Yes, I know it’s not even the end of summer, but I love all the dressing up and scary movies around Halloween so I was really excited to create this card for my friend Shann’s (YT: Art Junkie) Halloween challenge.

20150827_193252I used Strathmore 140 lb watercolor paper as my card base. I like the texture of the paper and I think the “tooth” of the paper picks up the intensity of Tim Holtz Distress Inks wonderfully. For the background, I wanted to try to simulate the sky at dusk, as the sun is setting and the full moon is out and shining bright.

To create the moon, I used a circle from the Diemond Dies Die-Normous Stack Ems Circle Nesting Die Set to create a stencil and mask from some left over packaging (I wanted a thick, sturdy stencil and mask for the harsher ink blending that I expected to do for the background). For the moon, I used the following Tim Holtz Distress Inks: Squeezed Lemon and Mustart Seed and lightly spritzed it with some water to create the look of lighter craters.  For the night sky I used (from light to dark): Scattered Straw, Wild Honey, Shaded Lilac, Dusty Concord, and Chipped Sapphire.

20150827_193327I wanted everything in the scene to look like it was silhouetted in moonlight so I cut everything out of black card stock. I used the following Diemond Dies:
Flying Bats Set (I used the medium and small bats)
Tombstone Set
Spooky Tree
Grass Border Die (I wanted the cemetery to look old and overgrown so I layered a lot)
I also had in my stash the spooky tree die from CC Designs so I tossed that one in too, although I don’t know if the card needed it.  The cross tombstone I just hand cut out with scissors (yes, we can still do that too even if we have dies)! 😀 The wrought iron fence with the bats at the very front was made with the Martha Stewart Halloween Iron Fence Deep Edge Punch that I’ve had in my stash for ages and love.

To add some “moonlight” I used a Sakura Clear Star Gelly Roll pen on the tops and side of each of the die cut pieces. It really helped all the die cuts pop even though they were all cut from black card stock, and of course, I love the shimmer. What can I say–I’m a glimmer girl! LOL

The following is a process video of making this card:
