I love the little crowned puppy sitting on a birthday cake from the Penny Black “Tiny Treats” stamp set. The instant I saw this image, it reminded me of our Havanese, Bandito, whom Mr. CraftyPaws lovingly calls, “The Prince.” Our Bandito is sweet, but absolutely rules our house with his strong will and persuasive adorableness. Let’s just say, he almost always gets his way. (hehehe)
I decided to watercolor this image to create another CAS birthday card — this time for my nephew (who will totally get the reference to this puppy being “our prince”).
I stamped the image using Versafine Ink onto watercolor paper and used the following masculine but springy Tim Holtz Distress Marker colors to water color the image: Salty Ocean, Tumbled Glass, Squeezed Lemonade, Twisted Citron, and Spiced Marmalade. To color up the pup to match the markings of our Bandito, I used a couple applications of Tea Dye in just the right spots. đ
The inexpensive Seth Cole watercolor paper I used (from Tuesday Morning) absorbs moisture super fast so it was not easy to get a blended look, but the image was so small that the lack of blending also meant less bleeding so it worked out. I also added Clear Wink of Stella for some added shimmer on the on the puppy’s crown and the cake (sorry you can’t really see that in the photos).
Next I cut around the image to a small 2.25âł x 2.25âł square size and then popped the whole piece up on fun foam so that it would be fully supported. Because I wanted a clean, seamless look, I cut another piece of watercolor paper for the card front and then adhered that to a blue card stock base (yes, I’m finally using the pre-cut and folded card bases from Recollections that I picked up on a Hot Buy at Michaels 3+ years ago).
The inside pale green card liner says, âBirthday Greetings From the Princeâ (LOL) I printed that out from my computer using what I imagine is a royal looking font. Then I stamped just the puppy again above the sentiment the way a crest might be. Because this stamping was a little sketchy, I filled in the less-well stamped area with a 0.03 pt Copic Multi-liner Pen.

Awww thanks oodles, Linda!
That is just the sweetest card. I try to sneak my KC in when I can. She’s a mini-schnauzer and there aren’t many stamps that look like her. I usually end up with a Scotty stamp and color it salt and pepper. I say that this is her house and she let’s me live in it…lol.
Awww thanks so much, Cynthia! Yes, I use shih tzu stamps usually for my Havanese or I sometimes draw my own. đ It’s so funny because Mr. CraftyPaws says the same thing about our pups–that it’s their house and we just live here to take care of them. lol
A wonderful card!
Thank you soo much for taking part in our “anything goes with optional flowersâ challenge over at Creatalicious & good luck in the draw.
Hope to see you again in our new challenge as wellâŚ
