Mixed Media Card for Thyroid Cancer Awareness | CraftyPaws

A sweet crafty friend, Shirlene (YT: LadyScrafts), has recently been found thyroid cancer free–YAY! To celebrate that and 3 years crafting on YT, she is hosting a challenge to use the colors of thyroid cancer awareness (teal, pink and purple) on a card.

20150916_111725I thought this was a perfect opportunity to play with some of the new mixed media things I have picked up recently, the super cute Inkdadinkado “You Make Me Smile All Over My Face” stamp set, and the Tim Holtz Bird Crazy Stamp Set and Matching Sizzix Framelits 18 Piece Bird Crazy Die Set.

For the background, I used Tim Holtz Distress Inks in Peacock Feathers, Seedless Preserves, and Picked Raspberry and my favorite smooshing technique onto 140 lb weight Strathmore watercolor paper. Then I stenciled on some texture for grass with the edges of the Prima Marketing 6 by 6″ Doily Stencil and the sun rays with the Tim Holtz 4.125 by 8.5″ Rays Stencil. I used Liquitex Professional Modeling Paste, which has a fabulous thickness to get into all those little crevices. Because I didn’t think the brightness of the stenciled areas was bright enough, I hit the tops of the stenciled areas with plain acrylic paint in yellow and grass green mixed with white. I also “framed” the edges of the card and the raised sentiment panel with dripped-on black acrylic paint.

I stamped out one of the happier looking birds from the Bird Crazy stamp set twice, and colored in them in with a Pentel waterbrush and Tim Holtz Distress Markers in Peacock Feathers, Squeezed Lemonade, Spiced Marmalade, and (around the feet to camouflage into the grass) Mowed Lawn.  I die cut out the eyes and beak as well as the wing on the second stamped image and layered that on the bird. I LOVE that the matching dies to these stamps cut out the images exactly–no white edge at all!  To add a little shine, I Glossy Accented the eyes, beak and legs of the little bird.  Finally I popped up the bird and the sentiment up on foam adhesive to add a little dimension.

This is the video share of this card:
