Happy Birthday to a Cool Nephew | CraftyPaws

My nephew is turning 13! Especially with his two older siblings, he is definitely no longer a little kid. He’s more like 13 going on 30. LOL So I wanted to create a more autumn-cool (less kiddie) birthday card for him. James from The Greeting Farm’s Creeper Crew collection, was just the ticket.

I colored James up with the following Copic colors to look like my nephew and James Dean:

Skin: E00, E01, E21 and R30
Hair: Y00, Y21, E31, and YR12
Leather jacket and boots: C2, C4, C5 and C7
White T-shirt: 0, C1 and C2
Jeans and eyes: B95, B97 and B99
I fussy cut him out and inked the edges with a Momento Tuxedo Black Marker for a nice clean finish.

For the background of the card, I decided to use up an old scrap of brick patterned paper that is so old I have no idea where it is from (I thought this gave a rough urban vibe to the card – lol). For another, brighter layer, I decided to do a kind of sunrise stenciling using a Tim Holtz Rays Layering Stencil and the following Tim Holtz Distress Oxide Inks: Spiced Marmalade, Broken China and Faded Jeans. I like the more opaque coverage that these Oxide Inks give over regular Distress Inks for this application because I wanted this background to be as bright and colorful as the Copic colored image.

For a little texture, I wrapped some midnight blue bakers twine around the rays layer and positioned James so that he would be right at the nexus of where the twine crossed. This twine is simply taped to the back of the matted sunrays-blended card (this also pops up this layer a smidge while keeping it flat enough to send through the mail).

For a little sparkle, I also added a handful of dark blue bling gems in varying sizes. Lastly, for a little more “visual movement,” I dug out some old Jillibean Soup “arrow” stickers from the 2014 Birthday Bisque collection. They all celebrate and point to the awesome birthday boy.

For the inside of the card, I kept the masculine feel going by lining the card with kraft card stock. Then I picked a few more stickers from the Jillibean Soup Birthday Bisque collection to add some fun color and birthday wishes sentiments. I hope my nephew likes the card. I know he’ll enjoy the check inside! 😀

The following is a start-to-finish process video of coloring and making this card:
