I had so much fun playing with some mixed media crafty goodies to make this “Eye of Newt” Halloween ATC for my friend, Kim (YT: snapdiva1). I love all the spooky, guey, oooh-y of Halloween, and it was great to really get into some mixed media with this in mind.
I started with Strathmore Cold Press 140-Pound Watercolor Paper because I knew I wanted a sturdy paper that could handle a lot of moisture. I then mixed some Liquitex Professional Modeling Paste with Ranger Perfect Pearls in Kiwi and Blue Smoke to make a lizard green colored paste. I pushed that paste through the center area of a Prima doily stencil to create a scaly texture. Until recently I have not been much of a stencil user, but I am LOVING this technique; it creates instant interest! Then to bring out the relief a bit more I dry brushed some black and grey acrylic paint over top, just lightly hitting the high points. To get some color to the lower areas of the card base and add some lizardy shimmer, I sprayed the whole thing with Recollections green shimmer and silver sprays.
I cut the eye opening with an X-acto knife and defined the inside of the eye with black Versafine ink using a finger dauber. Then to mold the opening around the large googly eye that I wanted to place behind, I wet the back of the card base with water to make it more pliable and took a round marker back to emboss a round shape. I used art glitter glue to adhere the eye down to the ATC chipboard base and then more glue to adhere the lizard skin card base over top.
As a finishing touch and to give a direction (top/bottom) to the ATC, I die cut some fun eyelashes for the newt using a Diemond Dies Grass Border Die. To add more shimmer and shine I coated the eyelashes with Recollections ebony colored glitter glue. Ooh la la! This newt just became bewitching! LOL
