A dear crafty friend’s daughter is very sick and has been in the hospital for the past week, and I wanted to make her a card that showed how our crafting community was rooting for her and hoping that she has a full and speedy recovery. I didn’t want a sad/sick card. I wanted a cheerful card with cute critters so I turned to the super adorable critters drawn by Stacey Yacula for Purple Onion Designs.

These critters are so delicately and sweetly drawn that I thought they would be perfect to try a dotting or pointillism style of Copic coloring. I stamped out the images with Momento Desert Sand Ink (to make this a no line style of coloring) and used the following markers to try this new-to-me technique:

Bunny (Buttercup): E40, E41, E31, E43, R20 and Distress Marker in Scattered Straw For the background, I used the MFT Die-Namics Grassy Hills Die to cut a piece of card stock about 1/3 of the way up to create a grassy foreground and a wide open blue sky. I blended on Tim Holtz Distress Ink (from top to bottom) in Broken China, Tumbled Glass, Twisted Citron and Mowed Lawn.

Then to give a mottled look that I thought complimented the pointillism coloring style, I sprayed plain water from a spray bottle onto my hand and splattered it on the inked card stock sky and grass. I popped all of it up on fun foam and adhered it to a white card base, leaving a 1/8″ border all around.

To add a little interest and “frame” the scene a bit, I used the smaller of the Pretty Pink Posh Scallop Frames Dies and inset that on the card front. I gave it a tiny bit of dimension by rolling some 1/4″ Scor-Tape to attach the frame to the card front.

To help the critters pop in the scene, I added the bunny and puppy with 1/16″ thick foam tape and the owl with 1/8″ thick foam tape (I wanted to owl to look like he was flying forward in the scene).

I didn’t want to distract from this serene (and hopefully uplifting) scene, so I left the sentiment of “sorry you’re feeling pawly” and “wishing you well” for the inside, along with my handwritten note.

The following is video sharing this card:
