After I made the pop up box card for my friend’s birthday, I immediately knew I wanted to make another one — this time for my dad, who’s turning 85 next week!

For my dad’s card, I paired the Lawn Fawn Scalloped Box Card Pop Up Die Set with the Mama Elephant “Tiny Ninjas” stamp set (WINK: there’s much less time-consuming coloring with this mostly solid stamp sets). To simplify the coloring while still making the card colorful, I stamped the ninjas with Memento Tuxedo Black Ink and Copic colored each of the ninja’s with the same skin tones and shadows but added different colored sashes:

Then I moved on to the pop up box card structure: I used some pale green card stock for the base and then I die cut a sheet of “Mystical Masterpiece” from my most hoarded Graphic 45 “Bohemian Bazaar Collection” patterned paper. I took care to center the stitched square and rectangle dies on the pattern to perfectly frame the octagon or cross shapes, and I must say I loved the classic, balanced look. Then for the “happy birthday” that would show when the box card was closed, I die cut the words using the Tim Holtz Sizzix “Script Celebration Words” three times from white, pale green and sparkly navy cardstock and stacked and offset them for interest and dimension.

For the inside layered snow-capped mountain backgrounds, I used white, pale plue, teal blue, royal blue and black cardstock (going dark to light as I went further back into the scene) with the Lawn Fawn Stitched Mountain Borders Dies. I printed the sentiment, “May the Stars Always Shine on You!” on my computer using a free downloadable font called, “Bonzai”, and matted it with a scrap of teal card stock to coordinate with the teal colored mountains that I extended out to the side wings of the pop up box card.

The most tedious part was the detailed fussy cutting and inking the cut edges (with a Memento Tuxedo Black Marker) of all the ninjas and throwing stars, but it was all worth it in the end. Using scraps of clear plastic packaging cut into strips and Ranger Multi Medium Matte, I popped up 7 ninjas and 9 throwing stars. When my dad opens up this card, there will be a surprise explosion of little ninjas and stars to wish him a wonderful birthday!

Disclosure: Many of the supplies I’ve used for today’s project are linked.
